Who We Want

We are currently hiring two internal teacher candidates as Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) coach starting in them 2021-2022 school year. We want talented, tenured teachers from diverse backgrounds and experiences, inspired and
enacting upon the mission steeped in equity, motivated to unleash our children’s potential.

We want a PAR coach who is a strong collaborator, skilled communicator, problem-solver, comfortable working in a community of continuous learning. We support teachers in all subject areas but have a particularly high need for teacher coach in the following areas:

●  Elementary Education

● Bilingual/Biliteracy (Cantonese)

● Special Education (Mild/Moderate & Moderate/Severe).

The PAR Program is a collaboration between the district and UESF and is governed by a panel composed of four District members and five UESF members. A Peer Coach is a teacher selected and directed by the PAR Panel to assist and review  assigned to the PAR Program. The PAR Program works with tenured teachers subject tointervention, teachers who voluntarily seek short-term support and new teachers to the profession.

Essential Duities & Responsibilities

● Orient tenured participating teachers to...
o District-wide goals and objectives, including CCSS, SFUSD core curriculum and other relevant curriculum materials, SFUSD signature pedagogical strategies, procedures and expectations for their content area; and
o Site specific requirements such as principals’ expectations, site PD plans, record-keeping requirements, etc.

 

● Use a continuum of coaching stances that address adult learning theory to facilitate strengthening instructional practices of tenured participating teachers by
o developing lesson and unit plans aligned to CCSS and SFUSD Core curriculum
o selecting and managing classroom materials for effective academic learning environments
o developing culturally relevant strategies to support the socio-emotional needs of all students
o practicing and implementing new learning through lesson demonstrations, facilitated peer
observations and other professional learning opportunities
o providing support with a variety of assessments that inform instruction and support student needs

 

● Observe and provide feedback to tenured participating teachers on intervention caseloads on weekly basis
● Maintain a log for each tenured participating teacher, including a summary of conversations, observations, and other forms of assistance provided. Said documentation shall be included in reports to the PAR Panel and shared copies with tenured participating teacher and site administrator
● Assume responsibility for submitting documentation for PAR Panel presentations to the Lead Coach by the designated dates in accordance with the Contract and guidelines described therein
● Recruit and support tenured teachers that request voluntary coaching through the Peer Support Program
● Co-develop with new, voluntary and tenured participating teachers a Professional Growth Plan and Individual Learning Plan that is aligned with the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) as well as district and school-wide goals
● Provide coaching support for beginning teachers including those on emergency permits, Intern credentials and those earning a clear credential through the SFUSD Induction Program. This includes weekly 45-60 minute weekly coaching sessions per each new teacher, and includes:
- Goal setting around the CSTPs
- Co-teaching, modeling, observations and providing instructional feedback
- Providing support with formative and summative assessments to inform instructional planning and
socio-emotional supports for learning
- Lesson and unit planning
- Documentation of time spent/needed paperwork
● Providing professional developments for teachers, the team, and the educational community, which may include professional learning around lesson planning, establishing a safe culture and climate, culturally responsive teaching practices and supports for educational testing such as CBEST, CSET, RICA and EdTPA
● Participate in scheduled department meetings and year-long professional development sessions for new coaches and other growth opportunities to develop one’s coaching stance and adult learning theory
● Meet weekly and collaborate regularly with colleagues as part of a supportive learning community to share resources, develop and present professional development, and present case studies
● Maintain a weekly schedule (Google calendar) and hard copy
● Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

California Clear Credential for subject area of assignment
● Five years of full-time SFUSD service as a teacher in the subject matter field of assignment
● Consistent Highly Satisfactory or Outstanding evaluations
● Recent service as an SFUSD classroom teacher
● Prior successful experience in a mentor/coach/support role for teachers

Desired Qualifications

Instructional Skills
● Exemplary instructional practices, including differentiation and supports for ELLs, SPED and struggling and/or
exceptional learners
● Caring classroom community evident in differentiated socio-emotional routines and structures for all children
that support a growth mindset, including an understanding of trauma-informed practices
● Robust use of formative and summative assessment tools to inform instruction in order to yield positive
learning outcomes, especially for ELLs, SPED and students who historically struggle to achieve at high levels
● Consistent implementation of SFUSD core curriculum, CCSS and culturally responsive pedagogy
Collaboration, Mentoring and Organizational Skills
● Reflective about one’s own learning gaps
● Willingness to accept and implement feedback to improve one’s practice

 

● Skilled communicator across and within affinity groups
● Effective facilitator of meetings, collaborator and developer of a professional culture within their grade level
team, departments, school and/or district-wide that demonstrates an adult growth mindset
● Ability to problem solve complex dilemmas or unexpected situations independently and/or willing to seek out
critical partners for support
● Ability to manage time and prioritize competing demands
● Ability to tap into core strengths and develop resilience in the face of challenging situations
● Familiarity with California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP)

What We Offer

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full time
WORK YEAR: School term plus 5 additional days (UESF Contract, 39.3.11); term of 3 or 4 years (39.3.5), as funding allows (39.3.9).

COMPENSATION:
● Peer Coaches shall receive a compensation differential equal to $5,000. (39.3.12)
● Peer Coaches have return rights to their schools (39.3.9)
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

PAR Coaches will meet with the PAR team before and after the school calendar year, as well as meet weekly throughout the year. Professional development activities include an orientation to the program, coaching stances and strategies, adult learning theory, and problem solving for developing adult growth mindset. Coaches will participate in ongoing professional development in content areas, standards-based instruction and assessment, providing feedback, time management, and uses of technology to strengthen instruction and collaboration.
