As the Landscape Manager you will report to the Director of Custodial Services, be a part of the Facilities Team andact as a district leader in creating and maintaining greenspaces for our students and community.

Job Duties

 

We expect our Landscape Manager will:


Demonstrate a Leadership Mindset

 

  •  Collaborate with the Custodial and Sustainability staff to meet SFUSD’s Zero Waste Goals by 2025
  • Participate in initiatives to green our schoolyards and create inviting, healthy, and inspiring landscapes
  • Assist in the development of a master maintenance plan with an emphasis on designing and building sustainable landscapes
  • Develop landscape standards including approved and recommended plant species, proper installation and care, and maintenance guidelines for SFUSD staff and volunteers

 

Manage to Results

 

  • Manage budgets and attend quarterly budget meetings to monitor spending and avoid overages
  • Create evaluation criteria for landscape maintenance and record landscape conditions annually to track improvements
  • Develop and implement inventories, maintenance record-keeping, and a service calendar for equipment and vehicles

 

Manage Teams

 

  • Supervise a team of 15-20 gardeners working independently and on crews as they conduct maintenance of over 130 school and office sites across the City
  • Manage resource allocation and critical support with a minimal budget
  • Foster individual and team growth through professional development
  • Promote an inclusive, antiracist culture through self-awareness, leadership and training

 

Manage Relationships

 

  • Act as partner alongside the Green Schoolyard Manager to foster partnerships and stewardship with community partners and volunteers
  • Work with project managers and landscape architects on new projects and schoolyard renovations. Review designs and plans and provide critical feedback on plant selection, irrigation design and components, and maintenance estimates.
  • Foster positive relationships with SFUSD staff and students through excellent customer service
  • Help implement a communication strategy to promote the landscape department’s work

Desired Qualifications

 

The strongest candidates will have:

 

  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s sustainability goals
  • Knowledge of and experience in sustainable landscape practices including composting and mulching, efficient water use, and Integrated Pest Management
  • Knowledge and experience working in San Francisco native gardens and landscapes
  • Experience implementing organizational change and developing systems where none exist
  • A proven record of effectively managing teams and implementing talent management strategies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across different departments, agencies, and community organizations
  • Success leading effective teams and individuals
  • Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including GSuite and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred
  • 2 years of related experience

 


Substitution: Education requirement may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year-for-year basis.

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $$98,416.47 - $134,433.68 commensurate with experience in a similar position.
