The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is the seventh largest school district in California, serving more than 54,000 students who speak more than 44 documented languages across 136 schools in the city of San Francisco every year. For the start of the 2022-23 school year, all SFUSD classrooms will be In-person. As such, all Prop A substitutes will be expected to work in-person and conduct all their teaching assignments in the classroom. Prop A substitutes will be responsible for the continued learning of all students in their classroom, maintaining a safe and supportive classroom culture, and collaborating with other teachers and administrators to ensure a successful school day.

Prop A substitutes support High Potential Schools that serve San Francisco’s most historically underserved populations and communities, and that have lower rates of academic achievement compared to other schools in the district. SFUSD will continue to have our Prop A substitutes support our highest priority absences while ensuring that equity remains a focal point at the heart of the program.

Minimum Qualifications

UPDATE

In light of the approval of SB 1397, the CTC has temporarily waived the Basic Skills Requirement from January 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024. Basic skills proficiency will once again be required for the initial issuance of the Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit after July 1, 2024. In addition to this requirement, any substitute permits issued during this time would not need to meet the basic skills requirement permanently. The following are required:

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited undergraduate institution
• Negative TB test administered within 60 days of hire
• Clearance of fingerprint background check
• Be available for assignments at least once a week, particularly on Mondays and Fridays
• Be flexible and willing to work all SFUSD schools, particularly at our High Potential Schools
• Work at least 12 days during the first semester, at least one day per week, or a minimum of 36 days by the end of the school year

What We Offer

Salary:

Prop A substitutes receive a daily rate of $287.57. 

Bonuses:

10 day bonus: an additional $34.46 per day is earned after working ten (10) consecutive days in the same assignment. After the 10th day the additional amount is paid retroactively.

Quality Teacher and Education Act (QTEA) bonus: The following bonuses will be paid after the end of each semester.

• $200 for teaching at least sixty (60) days per semester 
• $400 for teaching at least fifty (50) days per semester in High Potential school(s)
