The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is the seventh largest school district in California, serving more than 57,000 students who speak more than 44 documented languages across 132 schools in the city of San Francisco every year. The Arts Department in San Francisco Unified School District is seeking Art Teachers who are passionate about working with youth of all skill levels to teach Dance, Music (General and Instrumental), Theatre, Media Arts, and Visual Arts (Drawing, Animation, Photography, Painting, Ceramics, etc) for Pre-K/TK, elementary, middle, and high schools across the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In accordance with the California Standards of the Teaching Profession, teachers work under the supervision of site and/or central office administrators and in collaboration with their school staff, families, and community and are responsible for the fulfillment of the essential duties set forth below: 

In the domain of access and equity, the Elementary Itinerant Dance Teacher will be expected to:

• Collaborate with school leadership to remove systemic barriers and design an equitable schedule for each and every students to access arts programming at each site, each year;

• Review IEPs and available student data to plan and design curriculum that centers students' strengths, abilities, interests, and opportunities for individual growth, creativity, and empathy/community-building;

• Clearly communicate instructional objectives with classroom teachers, students, and families on a regular basis; 

• Develop a curriculum and demonstrate pedagogical practices that honor and center multi-ability, multiracial, multicultural, and multilingual artists, artistic processes, projects, and exemplar artworks.

In the domain of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, the Elementary Itinerant Dance Teacher will be expected to:

• Design and deliver an inclusive and antiracist, standards-based, comprehensive and sequential dance curriculum;

• Provide differentiated instruction and accommodation for all students including ELD, Special Education, Foster and Homeless youth;

• Demonstrate student-centered pedagogy such as discovery-based learning, limited teacher talk, open-ended questioning and facilitation of discussion and reflection to develop critical thinking and communication skills;

• Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff, where possible, to support cross-content alignment and the integration of dance into the regular classroom learning to ensure all students receive standards-based dance instruction in foundational skills as well as fully integrated lessons

• Use student data and professional reflection to plan and revise curriculum and instruction on an ongoing basis

• Analyze student work to monitor needs and successes for each and every student;

• Submit required service data for each semester, including classes per day by school, name of teacher of record, length of each class period, grade level, and the number of students, including all Special Education classes.

This position requires travel to various locations throughout the District. This position may require sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, lifting and pulling/pushing a cart of materials/supplies. In accordance with the California Standards of the Teaching Profession, itinerant teachers work under the supervision of central office administrators and in collaboration with school site administration, families and community and are responsible for the fulfillment of the essential duties set forth.

• Committed to understanding student academic needs and catering instruction to meet those specific needs;

• Supportive and knowledgeable of students’ social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs;

• Understanding of the benefits of showcasing student work within the local and wider school community;

• Able to scaffold instructional activities that facilitate engaging and appropriate learning opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

SFUSD requires all teachers to hold or be pursuing a valid California teaching credential and an English Learner or Bilingual Authorization. We welcome applications from teachers who have not yet received their credentials, and our Credentials Team is happy to work with each teacher who's accepted a position in SFUSD to apply for permits that allow him/her to teach while pursuing a credential.  Specifically, for this position, you will need: 

• Bachelor's degree or relevant field experience and one of the following:

  •  A Single Subject Credential for Dance

  • A Multiple Subject Credential with Supplemental Authorization in Dance

  • To be pursuing a valid California teaching credential as specified in a or b above. 

*Note- If you do not currently have a teaching credential or are not currently enrolled in a program, the Arts Department will assist you in: 

1. Applying for and obtaining a Golden State Teacher Grant- up to $20,000 through the California Department of Education for any of these Approved Institutions and Programs and/or 

2. Applying our departmental Credential Incentive Stipend to help cover up to $10,000 of the cost of a credentialing program (Cal State East Bay and SF State are about $11,500 for the total program).
